The Solar System: A Reliable Circuit
We’ve located the solar system within the Milky Way—a galaxy far, far away, as George Lucas might say—and charted the main planets in their circuit around the sun. These planets march in elliptical paths, not perfectly centered on the sun but slightly offset.
Remarkably, we’re part of a very reliable system. This orbital choreography has been running for eons and is forecast to continue for many more—without a strike, picket line, or even a missed lap.
23.5 Degrees
Earth completes one elliptical lap around the sun each year. During that journey, four key events occur due to the planet’s axial tilt relative to its orbital track.
This tilt is commonly cited as 23.5 degrees, though in reality it fluctuates—from the low 20s to just over 24 degrees. The consequence of this tilt is profound: each quadrant of Earth’s orbit corresponds to a distinct season.
Imagine a personalized planet, upright and symmetrical, running laps around the sun. In that scenario, solar radiation would be evenly distributed across the globe. But with a 23-degree tilt, the radiation varies—resulting in uneven suntans. When one hemisphere basks in summer, the other experiences winter, and viceversa.
The Ellipse Factor
Let’s dig deeper into this uneven distribution. Because the sun isn’t positioned at the center of Earth’s elliptical orbit, four notable points emerge: two where Earth is equidistant from the sun (the equinoxes), and two where it’s either closest or farthest (the solstices).
In practical terms, these are the orbital points where Earth reaches its nearest and farthest distances from the sun—known as the Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice. And next time you visit that upscale gym in New York City called Equinox, you’ll know exactly what’s in a name.
